The Guard Who Found Islam.

The Guard Who Found Islam.

Terry Holdbrooks stood watch over prisoners at Gitmo. What he saw made him adopt their faith.

Army specialist Terry Holdbrooks had been a guard at Guantánamo for about six months the night he had his life-altering conversation with detainee 590, a Moroccan also known as "the General." This was early 2004, about halfway through Holdbrooks's stint at Guantánamo with the 463rd Military Police Company. Until then, he'd spent most of his day shifts just doing his duty. He'd escort prisoners to interrogations or walk up and down the cellblock making sure they weren't passing notes. But the midnight shifts were slow. "The only thing you really had to do was mop the center floor," he says. So Holdbrooks began spending part of the night sitting cross-legged on the ground, talking to detainees through the metal mesh of their cell doors.
He developed a strong relationship with the General, whose real name is Ahmed Errachidi. Their late-night conversations led Holdbrooks to be more skeptical about the prison, he says, and made him think harder about his own life. Soon, Holdbrooks was ordering books on Arabic and Islam. During an evening talk with Errachidi in early 2004, the conversation turned to the shahada, the one-line statement of faith that marks the single requirement for converting to Islam ("There is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet"). Holdbrooks pushed a pen and an index card through the mesh, and asked Errachidi to write out the shahada in English and transliterated Arabic. He then uttered the words aloud and, there on the floor of Guantánamo's Camp Delta, became a Muslim.
When historians look back on Guantánamo, the harsh treatment of detainees and the trampling of due process will likely dominate the narrative. Holdbrooks, who left the military in 2005, saw his share. In interviews over recent weeks, he and another former guard told NEWSWEEK about degrading and sometimes sadistic acts against prisoners committed by soldiers, medics and interrogators who wanted revenge for the 9/11 attacks on America. But as the fog of secrecy slowly lifts from Guantánamo, other scenes are starting to emerge as well, including surprising interactions between guards and detainees on subjects like politics, religion and even music. The exchanges reveal curiosity on both sides—sometimes even empathy. "The detainees used to have conversations with the guards who showed some common respect toward them," says Errachidi, who spent five years in Guantánamo and was released in 2007. "We talked about everything, normal things, and things [we had] in common," he wrote to NEWSWEEK in an e-mail from his home in Morocco.
Holdbrooks's level of identification with the other side was exceptional. No other guard has volunteered that he embraced Islam at the prison (though Errachidi says others expressed interest). His experience runs counter to academic studies, which show that guards and inmates at ordinary prisons tend to develop mutual hostility. But then, Holdbrooks is a contrarian by nature. He can also be conspiratorial. When his company visited the site of the 9/11 attacks in New York, Holdbrooks remembers thinking there had to be a broader explanation, and that the Bush administration must have colluded somehow in the plot.
But his misgivings about Guantánamo—including doubts that the detainees were the "worst of the worst"—were shared by other guards as early as 2002. A few such guards are coming forward for the first time. Specialist Brandon Neely, who was at Guantánamo when the first detainees arrived that year, says his enthusiasm for the mission soured quickly. "There were a couple of us guards who asked ourselves why these guys are being treated so badly and if they're actually terrorists at all," he told NEWSWEEK. Neely remembers having long conversations with detainee Ruhal Ahmed, who loved Eminem and James Bond and would often rap or sing to the other prisoners. Another former guard, Christopher Arendt, went on a speaking tour with former detainees in Europe earlier this year to talk critically about the prison.
Holdbrooks says growing up hard in Phoenix—his parents were junkies and he himself was a heavy drinker before joining the military in 2002—helps explain what he calls his "anti-everything views." He has holes the size of quarters in both earlobes, stretched-out piercings that he plugs with wooden discs. At his Phoenix apartment, bedecked with horror-film memorabilia, he rolls up both sleeves to reveal wrist-to-shoulder tattoos. He describes the ink work as a narrative of his mistakes and addictions. They include religious symbols and Nazi SS bolts, track marks and, in large letters, the words BY DEMONS BE DRIVEN. He says the line, from a heavy-metal song, reminds him to be a better person.

Who is Ass-ra No-Money?

Al Salamu 'Alaykum.

An interview with an enemy of Islam and the Muslims, Asra Nomani (no relation of `Allama Shibli Nomani).

Honest interviews : Asra Nomani

Imagine if Nomani got some sodium pentothal in her martini and gave an honest interview....

DrM : So whats the “Muslim womans freedom tour” about ?

AN. : Well I couldn’t come up with anything catchy so I decided to steal some terms from the civil rights movement. I haven’t had much luck getting attention with the shake down I’ve tried to pull at the Morgantown masjid, so I had to do something.

DrM : What’s going on there ?

AN : Actually I didnt have a chance to win a seat on the masjid advisory panel, so I bailed the day the election. Then I started claiming that the ladies section was insufficient for us even though there was plenty of room.

DrM : Why did you do that ?

AN : It got the media’s interest, and I was on CNN…they just love me on FOX too might I add. Plus, I got a chance to plug my book, nothing like a little free PR.

DrM : You mean “Standing alone in Mecca” ?

AN : Yes, order your copy today !

DrM : This was about your Hajj experience correct ?

AN : Yep.

DrM : There were over 2 million pilgrims at last year’s Hajj, so what do you mean by the “stand alone” part ?

AN : Well..uh…it sounded tight. There’s only one Asra Nomani ya know !

DrM : You’re a bit of a whack job aren’t you ?

AN : Hey now ! Well, maybe just a bit…I can assure I’m just your typical single Muslim mom raising a kid.

DrM : Why single ? Wheres hubby ?

AN : Lets not get into that…..

DrM : I’ll let you plug your book if you do….

AN : In that case…..I was on assignment in Pakistan, where I met this one dude…and things kinda happened.

DrM : Hold up…that would be adultery then..

AN : Look man, I was trying the latest tantrika mumbo jumbo…you can read all about it in my other book on tantrika sex…on sale for only $17.95.

DrM : So did you get married ?

AN : Nope, he ran off, the bastid.

DrM : Well that’s too bad….but don’t you think Muslims would have a problem with someone with your past telling them how to practice Islam ?

AN : Look I screwed up, cut me some slack here ! All you gotta do is perform Hajj and all is forgiven.

DrM : Well it doesn’t quite work like that…you have to be sincere in your desire for forgiveness…

AN : I am sincere, dawg !

DrM : But you do oppose punishing the crime of adultery…

AN : Well, just punishing the female part, they could stone the men with a boulder for all I care. Besides everybody does it these days, you cant go around slamming people for getting busy….you know what I’m saying ?

DrM : Actually no, I myself have never committed adultery, nor do any of Muslim friends engage in it.

AN : You’re a wahabi aren’t you ?!

DrM : …no, not really.

AN : You believe in Quran and Hadeeth ?

DrM : …Yeah

AN : WAHABI ! Neo-Salafi ! Muslim Pat Robertson !

DrM : Hey everybody, buy Asra’s book….

AN : Ok, I’ll let you off the hook this time….

DrM : So tell me what you mean by Muslim woman “reclaiming their rights.”

AN : Actually that’s just some bullcrap we cooked up to get the media’s attention. I would like to see more woman ditch the hijab.

DrM : Why is that ?

AN : Well to be honest with you, I’m a bit jealous of those hijabis. They get respect and they don’t have to put out to get it.

DrM : Why are you proggies so obsessed with hijab when Muslim woman face so many other challenges ?

AN : Well….we don’t want to them to wear it….and that’s all I have to say about that.

DrM : They make you look bad don’t they ?

AN : Yeah they do, kinda makes it hard to pull a fast one on ignorant non-Muslims with them around.

DrM : But you did wear a hijab on the cover of your book…

AN : Available at bookstores near you for only…

DrM : We got that already. But why the hijab on the cover ?

AN : It grabs the viewers attention, but its cool, I don’t wear it inside the book.

DrM : About your local masjid….when did that controversy start ?

AN : Actually I rarely go to the masjid, and I never went before…but it was a good place to start my campaign.

DrM : But why do you want a larger prayer hall if you sneak into the men’s section ?

AN : To be honest, its more fun…there’s a couple of guys with really tig…

DrM : Time out

AN : Dang ! I was just getting to the good part.

DrM : This aint “sex and the ummah.”

AN : Which I also co-write with that other lady holed up in Arkansas.

DrM : So why the need to publish porn ?

AN : Well that Nassef character, you know the one with the big boot print on his face thought it would get us some page hits, as well as offer a release for the readers, most of whom aren’t old enough to drink. We think its better than them surfing smut sites.

DrM : But its still porn, and rather vulgar at that….

AN : Don’t be such a prude, Muslims should enjoy the sexual impulse..nothing to be afraid of…

DrM : Uh I don’t think that’s a problem given that Muslims have the highest birthrate on the planet. Only difference I see is they do it behind closed doors and after marriage.

AN : You better cut it out with that wahabi crap, man

DrM : Yawn, so what do you do these days ?

AN : Well since I dont have a job, I enjoy harassing the people at the masjid, and trying to make non-Muslims like me as a "good muslim." Otherwise I'm just a bitter middle aged woman eating bonbons and watching Oprah. Hopefully, some clueless liberals and ill-meaning conservatives will pick up my books, every single penny counts.

DrM : I think I've had enough. Off you go granny.

AN : Wha ?!

DrM : Theres a MSNBC camera crew outside waiting to hear your deep Islamic thoughts.

Adoption in Islam.

It is not only childless couples who choose to adopt, many couples with children choose to adopt either family members or orphans to nurture and take care of. Looking after a child as well as arranging for his/her education and well being is an admirable thing. However it should be kept in mind that by adopting a child his/her lineage does not change according to the Shari'ah.

The purpose of this discussion is to explain the laws concerning the adoption of children. These laws should be adhered to at all times and under all conditions. By doing this the adoptive parents will ensure that the rights of the adopted child are not transgressed and in so doing the act of adoption will become most beneficial to the parents.

1. To change the lineage of the adopted child or to write the adoptive parents’ name in place of that of the real parents will be Haram. Care should be taken that at every juncture the real parents’ names are written and that the child is referred to as the child of his/her real parents. It should be made clear as to who the child's real parents are so that people may call the child by his/her original name, ensuring that the child is well aware of his/her true background.
Allah SWT mentions in the Qur’an – “…and Allah has not made your adopted sons your real sons. That is your saying with your mouths. But Allah says the truth. And he guides to the (right) way. Call them (adopted sons) by (the names of) their fathers, that is more just with Allah. But if you know not their father's (names, call them) your brothers in faith/Islam and freed slaves.” [Sura Al-Ahzab, verses 4&5]

2. If the wife of the adopting couple breast-feeds the child, then the child will become the Ridhau’ee (breast-fed) child of the couple. This means that the child is not required to observe Parda before her adoptive parents and any other children that they may have. The Ridhau’ee will not be permitted to marry any other children that his/her adoptive parents may have had. Finally, the adopted child will not be a heir to the adoptive father’s estate.

3. If the adopted child did not drink the breast milk of the adoptive mother, then the laws of Nikah and Parda will apply as per normal. It will therefore be correct for the adopted child to marry one of his/her adopted parents' children. An adopted girl won't be Haram on the man that adopted her, i.e. he can marry her. Similarly the adopted son won't be Haram on the woman that adopted him, i.e. she can marry him, and he is also allowed to marry the wife of the man that adopted him. It is incumbent upon them to carry out the laws of Pardah. Negligence with regard to this matter may result in many evils.

Nabi(Sall Allahu 'Alayhi Wasallam) made Hadrat Zaid bin Haaritha his son. The Sahaba started to call him Zaid bin Muhammad (Zaid, son of Muhammad). When the aforementioned verses were revealed, the Sahaba once again began calling him Zaid bin Haaritha. When Zaid Bin Haritha (RA) divorced his wife Zainab bint Jahsh, after the completion of her 'Iddah, Nabi(Sall Allahu 'Alayhi Wasallam) married her, even though she was the divorcee of Nabi(Sall Allahu 'Alayhi Wasallam)'s adopted child.  It is well known that the son's wife is Haram on the father forever, but because the adopted child is not the real child, the Nikah could therefore be allowed thereby refuting the famous false notion that it is incorrect to marry the adopted son's wife. This marriage is explained in detail in Sura Ahzab.

4. Even though the adopted child is naturally accepted as part of the family, the adopted child will not inherit from the estate of the adoptive parents. To subject the adopted child to the same laws of inheritance as that of the real children will be incorrect. However the adopted child may inherit as a family member, as is the case when one adopts one’s brother's child, it then becomes permissible for the child to become an heir. To be certain this type of case should be discussed with a prominent ‘Aalim.
If the adopted child is not an heir, a bequest can be made on his/her behalf. If the adoptee has real heirs i.e. children, father, brother, sister, husband or wife etc. then the bequest can only be up to a third (1/3) of the total inheritance. If the adoptee has no real heirs then the bequest can be for more than a third (1/3).The adopted child will only have rights over the wealth of the adoptee if he/she is an heir or a bequest was made for him/her or if he/she is the niece/nephew of the adoptee. Besides the above cases the adopted child has no right to claim the wealth of the adoptee.

5. After adoption the child must be allowed to visit his/her real parents, and there must be no difficulty experienced by meeting them. If this child is stopped from meeting his/her real mother, father, brother or sister, this will become Zulm (oppression).

6. The adopted child should not be treated in a different way. It is important to treat the adopted child with love and affection, especially if the child is helpless or in need of more attention. If a person feels that he/she can not maintain a good relationship with an adopted child, then they should not adopt, because instead of being worthy of reward he/she will be regarded as sinful.

7. While the adopted child is a minor, their wealth should be kept safe and not misspent. If the adoptee is needy then he/she can use the wealth of the orphan to provide for any necessities e.g. food clothes etc. In this a lot of precaution should be taken and no wastage should be incurred.
Allah mentions in the Qur’an that “Verily, those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans, they eat up only fire into their bellies, and they will be burnt in the blazing fire”
 (Sura Al-Nisaa’ verse10).
Therefore care should be taken that one should not spend the child's money on unnecessary things, and the wealth should be used according to the child's needs only. Wastage is to be avoided at all costs. The wealth must not be loaned, charity must not be given from it and it can not be invested. When the child reaches puberty and one feels that he/she is capable of handling the wealth, then the money should either be given to him/her or it should be deposited in an account. Once the child reaches puberty then Zakah will be Wajib on his/her wealth. At this stage he/she has the option of investing their money, on their own free will or by the advice of their guardian and to give out some money as Sadaqa. The guardian should always give that advice which is geared towards the best interests of the child in order ensure that waste is minimal.

8. When the child reaches a marriageable age, find a suitable family into which they can marry. Do not be negligent in finding a suitable family, especially concerning an adopted girl. Try to find the best family. Do not place the adopted child in an unsuitable family for any personal gain or greed or marry them off early for the same reasons. Likewise do not delay the marriage because of greed towards their wealth. Do not marry the child off without his/her consent, and do not force them into an unwanted marriage.

In conclusion we would like to say, that in adopting a child there are huge responsibilities. They deserve more attention than your real children. If a person adhered to all the above mentioned conditions, then he\she is worthy of great reward. However if these conditions are not fulfilled, then the adoptee will be deserving of great punishment.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.

Mufti Muhammad Ashraf.
